In a ground-breaking move that might completely change the way ships fuel, NYK, JERA, and Resonac have successfully completed a cooperative study to establish a safe supply of ammonia.

This innovation allows NYK to use the unique truck-to-ship technology to provide fuel ammonia to its ammonia-fueled tugboat (“A-tug”), marking a key milestone in maritime fueling history.

NYK, JERA, and Resonac recently completed cooperative research to guarantee a stable and safe supply of ammonia for maritime fueling.

The result of this endeavour was announced at Sea Japan 2024, a prestigious international maritime event where key stakeholders gathered to witness this historic moment.

The complete agreement that JERA, Resonac, and NYK inked last December forms the foundation of this accomplishment.

Since then, the three have devoted their efforts to creating safe operating procedures, creating effective ammonia transportation networks, and promoting legislation to control ammonia flow to ships.

The imminent completion of the truck-to-ship fuel ammonia delivery to NYK’s A-tug signifies an essential advancement in marine fuelling technology.

This project, which is expected to be completed by the end of May, could revolutionize the maritime sector.

At the same time, Shin Nippon Kaiyosha, a NYK Group company running the A-tug, and JERA announced a historic fuel-supply deal committed to a consistent supply of ammonia after the A-tug is finished.

This agreement supports international efforts to decarbonize the shipping sector and represents a significant step toward the widespread use of ammonia as a marine fuel.

The NYK Group highlights its commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing GHG emissions through oceangoing shipping activities.

NYK hopes to support global decarbonization efforts and increase the competitiveness of Japan’s maritime industry by leading projects such as ammonia-fueled ships.

The forthcoming implementation of truck-to-ship fuel ammonia bunkering, resulting from a joint venture between NYK, JERA, and Resonac, significantly advances marine fuelling procedures.

NYK’s dedication to environmental stewardship highlights its crucial role in influencing the future of sustainable marine transport as the sector adopts cutting-edge technologies to address climate problems.
