The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reported an oil spill at the loading terminal of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Nigeria’s delta region.

Osagie Edward, NIMASA’s head of public relations said in a statement on Sunday that the spill which occurred on December 14, 2024, was due to a ruptured pipeline.

The SPDC shut down the pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect nearby communities, per Edward.

He added that the spill reached the shoreline but NIMASA is monitoring the situation from an emergency operations centre.

NIMASA is collaborating with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the spill’s impact and extent to determine what needs to be done next.

He has requested the people to remain calm and assured that they are committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restoring the impacted areas.

This is not the first time such an incident happened. On August 14, an oil spill happened in an SPDC facility in the Imiringi community in Bayelsa state. The SPDC said it was the doing of oil thieves.
