The Japan based shipping company NYK and allied Company, Astomos Energy Coporation held a naming ceremony for a new LPG / Ammonia carrier vessel.
The ship is jointly owned by NYK and Astomos Energy. The naming ceremony was held on March 1st at the Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The new vessel was named “GAS GARNET” by the Senior Executive Officer of Astomos Energy, Yoshito Takahashi.
The vessel itself has a length of 229.9m and a beam of 37.2m. It has a storage capacity of 86,953 cubic metres. The vessel has a dual fuel engine that can use LPG and heavy fuel oil, although a small amount of heavy fuel is used as a pilot fuel for the LPG fuel ignition.
The ship is also equipped with a shaft generator, that can be powered by the shaft connecting the main engine to the propeller. This enables the ship to stop the diesel engine powering the shaft generator and power the ship completely through LPG.
NYK states that LPG operation will greatly lessen the emissions of the vessel, reducing SOx and CO2 emissions by 95% and 20% respectively.
