A Panamanian cargo ship collided with a Vietnamese fishing boat off Vietnam’s northern port city Hai Phong on Tuesday, killing four fishermen.
According to the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (Vietnam MRCC), the accident occurred at around 6:55 AM on April 8 while the Panamanian-flagged MV. Hosei Crown – a 120-meter-long, 21-meter-wide cargo ship – was en route from Chua Ve Port in Hai Phong to the Philippines.
The fishing vessel TH 92686 TS, carrying 12 crew members, was struck and quickly sank. The initial report stated that all 12 fishermen were missing following the collision.
On receiving the report, the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Region I instructed the Hosei Crown to release life rafts and search for the missing fishermen and dispatched The SAR 411 rescue ship to the scene.
By 9:10 a.m. rescuers had found eight of the fishermen and recovered the bodies of the four others.
According to preliminary information, the sea area was foggy at the time of the accident and winds were blowing at 12-28 km per hour.
The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center is investigating the cause of the accident together with other relevant agencies.
