A cargo ship with 11 crew members aboard sank off the southern island of Jeju, but all individuals were safely rescued, announced the Coast Guard on 16th February 2024.
The ship, named Keum Yang 6, weighing 3,500 deadweight tons (dwt), set sail from Gwangyang, South Korea, carrying a load of steel plates destined for Zhoushan, China.
Upon reaching the location at 11:52 p.m., the Coast Guard observed the vessel sinking at an angle of over 25 degrees to the left. All 11 crew members, including two Koreans, six Myanmar nationals, and three Indonesians, were successfully rescued about 1 1/2 hours later.
The rescue operation faced challenges due to strong winds and high waves.
The Coast Guard plans to conduct an investigation to determine the precise cause of the incident.
