According to Japan’s coast guard officials, two crew members are reported as lost following the capsizing of a South Korean chemical tanker off the west coast of Japan on 20th March 2024.
The chemical tanker named Keoyoung Sun, with a crew of 11 onboard, issued a distress call to the Japanese Coast Guard around 7 a.m., stating that it was listing in waters near an island off the coast of Shimonoseki city in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The coastguard reported that they successfully rescued nine individuals from a crew of eleven, comprising two South Koreans, including the captain, eight Indonesians, and one Chinese national.
As informed, the ship was reportedly seeking refuge from rough seas and strong winds by anchoring. The coast guard is currently engaged in search and rescue efforts using aircraft and patrol vessels.
Officials have not detected any leaks and are assessing potential environmental protection measures in the event of a leak.
